Gangster Squad is the latest effort from director Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland) and focuses on corrupt and seedy 1949 Los Angeles. The main premise is that LA is run by the Brooklyn-born mob boss Mickey Cohen (Sean Penn), who has his fingers in various dirty pies — namely drugs, guns, prostitutes and gambling. How does Mickey get away with all of this? Why, he has the local police and politicians in his back pocket, of course.
Everything and everyone is under the control of Mickey — that is, apart from a small, secret, “off the books” crew of LAPD cops that plan on taking Mickey Cohen down. Leading the group are Sgt. John O’Mare (Josh Brolin) and Jerry Wooters (Ryan Gosling). Joining Penn, Brolin and Gosling, the strong ensemble cast also features Nick Nolte, Emma Stone, Robert Patrick, Anthony Mackie, Michael Pena and Giovanni Ribisi.

“Gangster Squad” (2012) Debut Trailer
Here we have the trailer for the latest Ruben Fleischer film (Zombieland, 30 Minutes or Less). Gangster Squad tells the tale of off-the-books LAPD actions in the 40’s and 50’s and their efforts to keep the East Coast Mafia out of L.A.
From the trailer, I’m getting an Untouchables sort of vibe coming from the film, with a darker touch and minus the synth soundtrack. If that ends up being the case that will only make the the film that much more entertaining.
The film stars an ensemble cast headlined by Josh Brolin, Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone, Nick Nolte and Sean Penn with the likes of Giovanni Ribisi, Anthony Mackie, Robert Patrick, Michael Pena and Josh Pence also having roles in the movie.
No release date has been set.

The remake/reboot of RoboCop has been bounced from director to director over, what seems like, the last decade, but after recently locking down Elite Squad 1 & 2 director Jose Padilha & The Killing star Joel Kinnaman, it looks as though they’re trying to fill out the cast with some pretty great actors, namely Sean Penn, Edward Norton, Rebecca Hall & Gael Garcia Bernal.
