Geek Spotlight: Episode IX: Return to Reality

And now we are here at part three of my 3-part segment, Episode IX: Return to Reality

After calming down a bit and going through my hopes and fears for the future of Star Wars, it’s time for me to realize one crucial thing: it’s out of my hands.

That’s what it really comes down to in all its simplicity, but there are still other aspects that we haven’t explored that may come up down the line.

Geek Spotlight: Episode VIII: Pessimism Strikes Back

Following on the heels of Episode VII: A Fan’s Hope, we return to the new speculatory saga of Disney’s new-found ownership of the Star Wars franchise.

Episode VIII: Pessimism Strikes Back will look at a more negative reaction towards this news. As I stated previously, I was left torn at the news because Star Wars has been such a big part of my life and Disney still carries a negative stigma when it comes to other franchises beyond its own, as evidenced by Disney’s previous acquisition of Marvel.

Geek Spotlight: Episode VII: A Fan’s Hope

As reported earlier in the week, Disney moved in to purchase Lucasfilm from George Lucas. This left a mixed reaction among Star Wars fans, especially also considering the announcement of episodes 7 in 2015, followed by episodes 8 and 9, along with the plans to feature films every 2-3 years.

Many questions were raised as to why Lucas would sell his companies, but with his retirement announced earlier in the year, it should have come off as a smoke signalling Lucas’ separation from his beloved franchise.

The selling of Lucasfilm should pretty much signal the long debate of who truly owns the Star Wars universe: George Lucas or the fans. “It’s now time for me to pass Star Wars on to a new generation of filmmakers,” Lucas said, “I’ve always believed that Star Wars could live beyond me, and I thought it was important to set up the transition during my lifetime.” That in essence — though ownership now belongs to Disney — pretty much reinforces this idea that Star Wars is now a universe of the people and for the people.

Hit the break to check out part 1 of a 3-part segment on my thoughts on where I think Disney may go with Star Wars in film after their acquisition of Lucasfilm.
