Comic Review: Swamp Thing #20

image

Writer: Charles Soule
Penciller: Kano
Inker: Alvaro Lopez
Colourist: Matthew Wilson
Letterer: Travis Lanham

Previously, in Swamp Thing: After his defeat of Anton Arcane and the loss of his lover Abby, Alec Holland finds himself more alone than ever before. Trapped in his Swamp Thing body forever, he feels isolated from the human race, considering himself no longer part of it. His role as Avatar of the Green continues to shape his life, as he travels across the planet in order to fight threats against the Green – whether doing so endangers human lives or not.

Alec travels to Metropolis in order to speak to Superman about feeling apart from the human race – who better to talk to than an alien who has managed to assimilate into human culture with few problems? On a quick stop at the Metropolis Botanical Gardens, Alec discovers Jonathan Crane, frequent Batman villain the Scarecrow harvesting rare plants for his fear gas formula. Alec battles the Scarecrow, but falls unconscious after a barrage of fear toxins are unleashed – causing massive expansions of the botanical garden. Superman looks on from the sky, as plants overtake his city.

Comic Review: Swamp Thing #19

image

Writer: Charles Soule
Artist: Kano
Colourist: Matthew Wilson
Letterer: Travis Lanham

Previously, in Swamp Thing: Anton Arcane manipulated the Rot and bent its massive power to his will in order to unleash a catastrophe of epic proportions. He transformed the planet into a Rotworld, and killed or mutated all of Earth’s mightiest heroes and villains. Only the combined might of Alec Holland (the Swamp Thing), Buddy Baker (the Animal Man), and the Parliament of Decay were able to reverse these events and stop Arcane before his Rotworld ever came to be.

But sacrifices had to be made. In order to depose Arcane of his role as Avatar of the Rot, the true Avatar had to take their place; Swamp Thing’s lover Abby Arcane became the new Avatar of the Rot, and now she and Alec are forever separated. Plus, Alec’s human body, which was living inside of his swampy shell, was murdered once again. Alec is truly the Swamp Thing, now and forever.

Comic Review: Swamp Thing #18

image

Writer: Scott Snyder
Artist: Yanick Paquette
Colourist: Nathan Fairbairn
Letterer: Travis Lanham

Previously, in Swamp Thing: Anton Arcane, the Avatar of the Rot, tricked Buddy Baker and Alec Holland into entering the Rot itself. This trap allowed the Rot an entire year to take over Earth, unhindered by the Red and the Green. When Buddy and Alec were released from the Rot, they found the entire planet overrun by the forces of the Rot. Only two small pockets of resistance, the Red and Green Kingdoms, remained to fight off Arcane and his underlings.

After travelling across Rotworld, Alec and Buddy were reunited on the steps of Arcane’s fortress. As the forces of the Red and Green bought them time, Animal Man and Swamp Thing ventured into the castle in search of Arcane; it was too late. Having twisted Alec and Buddy’s family and friends against them, Arcane escaped into the Rot itself – Swamp Thing and Animal Man had no choice but to go after him and try to stop him, once and for all.

Comic Review: Swamp Thing #17

image

Writer: Scott Snyder
Artist: Andrew Belanger
Colourist: Tony Avina
Letterer: Travis Lanham

Note: The issue continues directly from Animal Man #17.

Previously, in Swamp Thing: Having been trapped inside the Rot for a year, Swamp Thing and Animal Man were unable to prevent the rise of Anton Arcane and the fall of everything they knew and loved. Released from Arcane’s trap, the duo have found the last pockets of resistance, the Red and Green Kingdoms, and amassed allies with which to wage war on the forces of the Rot.

Swamp Thing travelled to Gotham City and recruited Barbara Gordon and the remnants of Batman’s rogues gallery from Arkham Asylum, as well as devising a weaponized form of his bio-restorative formula which enables him to fight at his full strength, even in the presence of the Rot. Now, the final battle is upon them. Swamp Thing has battled across Rotworld with Anton Arcane’s stronghold his ultimate destination, and the fate of his true love Abby Arcane hanging in the balance.

How Is “Iron Man’s” Secret Origin Like “Swamp Thing”?

image

Marvel unleashed a teaser today for an upcoming arc on Kieron Gillen’s Iron Man series. At first it was just an awesome announcement for me because Dale Eaglesham would be replacing Greg Land (the reason I dropped the series) as the artist, but then some information and speculation started hitting the interwebs.

So, how is this “Secret Origin” like Swamp Thing? Two words: Anatomy Lesson.

Comic Review: Swamp Thing #16

image

Writer: Scott Snyder
Artist: Yanick Paquette
Colourist: Nathan Fairbairn
Letterer: Travis Lanham

Previously, in Swamp Thing: The Rot has won. After being tricked into spending a year away from the DC Universe, Animal Man and Swamp Thing have returned to Rotworld, where the Rot has taken over almost the entire planet. Standing against it are the Red and Green Kingdoms, small pockets of resistance in which the forces of nature fight back against the forces of decay.

Travelling to the Green Kingdom, Swamp Thing gains an ally in the form of Deadman. The pair travel towards Gotham City in order to recover a weapon that Batman was working on before the Rot took over the city. Deadman is defeated in battle with Anton Arcane’s nephew, William, and Swamp Thing finds himself in the Batcave, under attack by a Man-Bat. He is saved by another, who swiftly transforms back into a human; Barbara Gordon.

Guillermo del Toro To Work With DC On “Dark Universe”

image

[via]

In some great news, it appears that Guillermo del Toro –- fresh off the heels of rejecting Star Wars: Episode VII –- is joining forces with DC Comics.

After rumors dating back to last year, IGN has now confirmed with the director that plans are in place for a DC ensemble film featuring some of their more dark and supernatural characters. It seems to be a similar premise to the current Justice League Dark series that is running in the books. The title of the project is currently Dark Universe, although this could just be a working title for now.

Find out more after the break.

Comic Review: Swamp Thing #15

Writer: Scott Snyder
Artist: Marco Rudy
Colourist: Val Staples and Lee Loughridge
Letterer: Travis Lanham

Previously, in Swamp Thing: Swamp Thing and Animal Man are tricked by Anton Arcane into entering the Rot. An entire year passes whilst they are inside, though it is only moments for the pair. When they re-emerge, they find that the Rot has taken over the world, recruiting or killing Earth’s heroes and villains to its cause. There are now small pockets of resistance known as the Red and Green Kingdoms that are trying to survive the Rot’s onslaught; now that their avatars have returned, they may now stand a chance of turning the tide.

Swamp Thing and Deadman head for Gotham City to uncover a weapon that could be of use against the Rot’s powers, but are waylaid by the return of William Arcane, another avatar of the Rot like his uncle Anton. Meanwhile, in the past, Abby returned to her childhood home in order to try and defeat Arcane alone. Apparently, she failed, but despite the claims by the Parliament of Trees that Abby perished, Swamp Thing is sure that she still lives, and is intent on rescuing her from the Rot.

Top 5: Superheroes That Need Their Own Film

As the title suggests, with this piece I’ll be looking at a few superheroes that I think would flourish if given their own big screen outing. This is by no means a definitive list, and feel free to agree or disagree with my choices. Some may be an obvious choice, some a tad more controversial.

So, let’s get the ball rolling.

Comic Review: Swamp Thing #14

Writer: Scott Snyder
Artist: Yanick Paquette
Colourist: Nathan Fairbairn
Letterer: Travis Lanham

Previously, in Swamp Thing: The Rot has won. Anton Arcane tricked both Animal Man and Swamp Thing into the Rot dimension, where time passes differently to ours. In the year that passed during their time in the Rot, its forces were able to conquer our world, killing or twisting Earth’s heroes and villains to its own nefarious purposes.

Now Animal Man and Swamp Thing have made their way to the last strongholds of the Red and Green respectively, where the last pockets of resistance remain. Swamp Thing meets Poison Ivy, Deadman, and the Parliament of Trees, who tell him that his lover, Abby Arcane, perished in the war against the Rot. Swamp Thing is understandably distraught, but the Rot’s forces are incoming, leaving little time for grief.
