Games of the Week: Board Meeting

[via]

Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater HD (360): Beginning Xbox Live’s Summer of Arcade promotion is the remake of the first two games that started the extreme sports craze of gaming.

Select stages from the two games have been given an HD facelift and have been stripped down to the bare minimum game mechanics, like vert and street tricks, grinds, and manuals. The game will also receive DLC in the form of the series’ third game shortly after release.

Game Review: Skullgirls

What started as two separate projects from tournament fighter Mike “Mike Z” Zaimont and artist Alex Ahad, meshed into a single game that not only gained the support of newcomers Reverge Labs and hungry rookie Autumn Games, but even gained the attention of veteran Konami.

Now, after waves of promising trailers, hands-on tournament demos, and a sea of fan art, Skullgirls is finally here and ready to take a slice of the big fighting game pie.

But does this new 2D challenger provide a first round knockout? Or is it already game over?

“Minecraft” Headed To 360 In May, “Fable Heroes” And “Trials Evolution” To Follow

Microsoft and Markus “Notch” Persson have taken their sweet time bringing the indie hit Minecraft to the Xbox Live Arcade. But after the wait, Major Nelson announced today that the XBLA game would be available on May 9th for 1,600 points (or $20) as part of the new “Arcade Next” promotion.

One big catch with this announcement is that the Kinect support that was previously promised will not be in the game until a later update.

Major Nelson also announced that Trials Evolution, follow up to the hit Trials HD, will be released on April 18th for 1,200 points, Bloodforge will be out April 25th for 1,200 points, and the new action game, Fable Heroes, will be available on May 2nd for 800 points.

Game Review: Alan Wake’s American Nightmare

“So it’s going to be like that again?” asked Alan Wake as he steadied his flashlight and pistol against the twisted human caricatures colored in shadow and madness.

Well, when it comes to Alan Wake’s American Nightmare, the latest installment in the Alan Wake series, the answer is both yes and no.

Is this standalone title a worthy addition to a cult favorite? Or should you conserve those Microsoft Points for something much dreamier?

 Find out after the break.

“Quantum Conundrum” To Arrive In Summer 2012

Played and loved Portal? Well, Quantum Conundrum is the product of Kim Swift, the project lead of beloved first-person puzzle platform game. Similar to Portal, Quantum Conundrum is also a first-person puzzle game from Square Enix and Airtight Games and (as mentioned) designed by Kim Swift.

What sets it aside from Portal, aside from the colour scheme, is that instead of moving through portals, you’re now moving through several different dimensions. Quantum Conundrum follows the gamer as a kid visiting your eccentric old uncle, an inventor called Professor Quadwrangle. Professor Quadwragnle subsequently gets trapped inside one of the dimensions, and it is up to you to rescue him using his Inter-Dimensional Shift Device.

Check out the gameplay video embedded to know more. Quantum Conundrum is due out in Summer 2012 for the Xbox Live Arcade, PlayStation Network and PC.

“Alan Wake’s American Nightmare” Songs Revealed

[via]

If you had the pleasure of playing the first Alan Wake title, then you already know that the soundtrack played a pretty significant role, whether it was searching for clues from in-game group Old Gods Of The Asgard, or featuring a song to end each chapter like a TV episode.

It seems that the upcoming XBLA Alan Wake’s American Nightmare will be no different. EMI and Remedy Entertainment revealed a couple of songs that will make their way into the title.

For the rockn’ news, check after the break.

Games of the Week: Children Are The Future

AMY (PSN, XBLA): Escaping from a town overrun with the military and demons would be no easy task. Add in saving one eight-year-old autistic girl with the fate of the entire world in your hands and I’d say that players have their work more than cut out for them this week.

Gaming Backlog: Trenched/Iron Brigade

Tim Schafer and Double Fine dropped out of the triple-A title business soon after Brütal Legend flopped, shifting development into a smattering of XBLA titles instead. Well, that and Once Upon A Monster, which I continue to hear is curing cancer in third world nations with its superior quality. The companies latest arcade release came a few months ago in the form of Trenched (now known as Iron Brigade for reasons I will explain later), a quasi-tower defense game involving salty commanders, giant robots and a villainous army of television sets. It has multiplayer. It has customization options. It has an antagonist with a really great beard.

Don’t worry, it gets better from there.

“BloodRayne” Goes 2D this Summer for PSN and XBLA

Majesco has set “early August” as the date of release for the upcoming BloodRayne: Betrayal for PSN and XBLA. The game, which will cost $15, is taking a new approach setting its fangs for 2D arcade action thanks to developer WayForward’s free reign over the property.

“Developer WayForward has completely reinvented the concept of BloodRayne for the better, saying that Majesco pretty much gave them carte blanche to make the license their own.”

Rayne hasn’t seen game action since 2004’s BloodRayne II, but that hasn’t stopped her spell in other mediums.

Rayne was featured in MTV’s show Video Mods, where she, um, “acted” out an Evanescence song. Rayne was also in a series of Uwe Boll directed films with the third entry, BloodRayne: The Third Reich, scheduled to release on DVD and Blu-Ray July 5th. And yes, there are already plans for a fourth film.

Oh and let’s not forget that she was the first video game character to appear in Playboy Magazine in 2004.

I guess with all the other stuff she’s been involved in, why not try 2D, too? Besides, anything that’s giving me Shank vibes cannot be a bad thing right?

You can view a trailer for the game here.

Games of the Week: Time To Get DiRT-y

DiRT 3 (PS3, 360, PC): The latest release from one of the master developers of racing games, Codemasters, takes us back into the grimy world of rally cars. The new iteration boasts more than 50 cars and more events spanning the world from Europe to Africa to the U.S.. If you’re really in love with the series or just have $300 bucks to burn, grab the special edition that includes an RC car to play with when you don’t feel like parking yourself in front of your television.

Dead or Alive Dimensions (3DS): The first game in the series that doesn’t include famed producer Tomonobu Itagaki, the jiggly fighter returns with another first: a handheld title (not including Paradise). The title looks to combine the best elements of the entire series to date and roll it into one bouncy package. I think this is also the first game with emphasized chests in 3D.

Other Games:

  • Duke Nukem: Critical Mass (DS)
  • Dungeons and Dragons: Daggerdale (XBLA, PC)
  • Kung Fu Panda 2: The Video Game (PS3, 360, Wii, DS)
  • Naughty Bear - Gold Edition (PS3, 360, PC)
  • 99Bullets (DSi Ware)

Guardian Heroes-HD Remake (XBLA) Gameplay Footage

Treasure recently announced that they are bringing an HD remake of the classic Sega Saturn beat em’ up to Xbox Live Arcade this fall.

Gamespot uploaded gameplay footage of the upcoming title on their site, showing that Treasure has definitely improved the graphics, though apparently players will still have the option to switch to original graphics.

Released in 1996, the beat ‘em up could probably be compared to Castlevania Symphony of the Night as far taking a tried and true genre of 2D gaming and pumping it with all sorts of features to set it apart from the rest of the pack (rpg elements, multiple paths, a versus mode with up to 45 characters).

Definitely looking forward to this release.

Crazy Taxi hitting PSN and XBox Live

If you were still arcade hopping (or driving) or were a faithful Dreamcast owner around the Y2K era, you probably will remember this frenetic taxi game. It had a simple and addictive objective: Earn bodacious bucks by driving customers to their destination as fast as you can.

For a standard taxi fare of $10, you can now blaze through the streets of the lookalike San Francisco on your 360 and PS3. Supported with 720p HD graphics and widescreen capability, Crazy Taxi is set to hit PSN on Oct. 23 and XBLA on Oct. 24.

CANNOT GO UNSEEN: If you’re a fan of One Piece, inspect the photo above.
