Toy Replica Of “Akira” Film Poster
Mike Amos, photographer and part-time contributor for Pop GO, used his Kaneda with Motorcycle McFarlane toy set and a homemade lighting system — softbox setup consisting of 2 posable flex lamps, cardboard with aluminum foil lining the inside, and tissue paper — to replicate the well-known poster image used for the anime film adaptation of Akira.
He also hand-held and manually triggered a Canon 430ex Speedlight to generate the shadows, and pen-tooled the Japanese characters with Impact font and drop shadow on Photoshop.

Yukihira Souma’s dream are to become a full-time chef in his father’s restaurant and surpass his father’s culinary skill. But just as Yukihira graduates from middle schools, his father, Yukihira Jouichirou, closes down the restaurant to cook in Europe.

Although downtrodden, Souma’s fighting spirit is rekindled by a challenge from Jouichirou, which is to survive in an elite culinary school where only 10% of the students graduate. Can Souma survive?

Thoughts: Most certainly one of the most interesting manga released this past week.  My only worry is that the reactions are too over-the-top.  We don’t need another Yakitate!! Japan.

More Live-Action “Akira” Storyboard Art

The Akira live-action movie may currently be in production limbo, but that hasn’t stopped the outpour of storyboard art that’s recently hit the web.

Part of me is starting to think that these releases are meant to generate positive interest in the film, or at least suggest to fans that maybe this wasn’t going to be Dragonball Evolution 2: Electric Boogaloo. I’ll let you be the judge.

More info and images after the break.

Retroactive Review: Akira (manga)

What eventually became a landmark film in Japanese animation started off as this, the Akira manga by Katsuhiro Otomo.  Needless to say, this is a manga classic.

Akira features a world after World War III.  The Japanese government becomes obsessed with funding research into espers, humans who have psychic powers.  Their research proves successful with the awakening of a number of espers.

Enter Tetsuo Shima. After getting injured by an explosion caused by an escaped esper he starts to develop powers himself.  His powers change him into a cold killer whose gripes with his once friend, Shotaro Kaneda, become magnified into hate.  Now the both of them become tangled in a fight between not just two teenagers, but the government and the resistance, esper verses human.

This was the winner of the 1984 Kodansha Manga Award for best general manga.

Kaneda Remix (Akira Soundtrack)

Weekend Remix: That’s Mister Remix To You, Punk!

Song: Kaneda Remix
By: HinonO
Based On: Kaneda Theme From Akira
Original Composer: Geinoh Yamashirogumi

Rev up for this week’s Weekend Remix as we delve into the mind trip world of Akira.

Classic is a word that gets thrown around more than a last ditch Spirit Bomb in Dragon Ball Z. But when talking about Akira, whether in manga or anime form, classic is probably the most appropriate word you can use.

Recent rewatches of the film have made me pay particular attention to the awesome soundtrack, which brings us to this week’s remix. Kaneda is one of those tracks that, although doesn’t need to be touched, can show a lot of potential for a cool remix. And HinonO seem to hit the proverbial nail on the head with this techno mix.

What you have to admire, is just how well the hollow wooden percussion and chants from the original mesh so well with HinonO’s techno groove. Honestly, it’s a track that would still feel right at home with the film or the clubs.

If you’d like to hear more from HinonO take a look at this SoundCloud page.

Until next weekend…GO Party!

In a special feature in the latest issue of Geijutsu Shinchou, Akira’s author Otomo Katsuhiro was interviewed regarding his latest work.

Otomo-sensei answered in the interview: “It [his latest work] will be serialized in a Shouen magazine. I’m already starting on my first shouen-genre work and I’m still in the middle of preparation and gathering materials for it.”

The mystery work that Otomo-sensei talked about is going to take stage in the Meiji era.

Live-Action “Akira” Film Storyboards

While the Akira live-action movie’s fate is unknown yet again, that doesn’t mean there wasn’t any type of production.

Case in point, the above storyboards from a version that was in the process of being made in 2008. At this time, Short-film director Ruairi Robinson was attached to direct from a script by Gary Whitta (Book Of Eli) and Leonardo DiCaprio as producer. Storyboard art was done by Sylvian Despretz (Gladiator, Alien: Resurrection).

“Virtua Fighter’s” Akira In “Dead Or Alive 5”

It must be the year for crossovers, as Team NINJA revealed that Virtua Fighter’s Akira will be in Dead Or Alive 5. The Bajiquan master appears in the video after Kasumi and Ayane’s brawl.

While this isn’t the first time the series has featured guest characters from other series, it appears to be the first time they’ve included a character from another fighting game.

Dead Or Alive 5 comes out September 2012 for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

Fan-Made “Akira” Teaser

French Filmmaker Fabien Dubois has created this short 40-second teaser for a live-action version of the anime/manga Akira. It is short, but the video features a character named Elliott Grahams standing among a ruined city with an unnamed character providing narrative to the events that have transpired.

Yes, the characters aren’t named Testuo and Kaneda, but I see no problem with it when you have fans who went to go see Chronicle and essentially call it Akira, yet still have a problem with an actual live-action adaptation of Akira
