Film Review: Epic

“Moist is what we do.”

Blue Sky Animation Studios is a solid anomaly in the animation world. Like the number five pitcher in your rotation, they never seek to surprise or keep anyone on their toes, they just want to deliver something that goes right down the middle of the plate. They rely more on stunt casting & crowded, busy composition than they do on creative voice casting or innovative storytelling (the hallmarks of the better animation studios in the industry).

Therefore, it’s hard to be too critical of their latest animated feature, Epic, as it has no real ambition beyond getting kids to sit down and shut up for ninety odd minutes. Don’t get me wrong: there’s lots of things to nitpick and pull apart in this film, but because it took no real risks, it’s virtually impossible for me to look down my nose at the film.

Maybe I’m just getting soft, but judged solely on its ambitions, Epic achieves more or less exactly what it set out to achieve.

In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Will Smith revealed that he turned down the titular role in Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained. Apparently, Smith felt that the Django role wasn’t the lead of the film, which wasn’t what he wanted.

More after the break.

“Epic” (2013) U.S. Trailer #2

A new trailer has been dropped for Blue Sky Studios’ latest animated flick Epic

The trailer offers new footage into a movie that sees Amanda Seyfried’s character Mary Katherine being brought down to a whole new and unseen world. There she must band together with a ragtag group of heroes to save not only the forest, but our world as well.

What’s great about this trailer — depending on which side of the fence you’re on about the cast — is that audiences finally get a glimpse into much of the film’s voice talents aside from the main cast.

Epic features the voice talents of Amanda Seyfried, Colin Farell, Josh Hutcherson, Jason Sudeikis, Christoph Waltz, Aziz Anzari, Pitbull, Steven Tyler, and Beyonce Knowles.

The movie opens up on May 24th.

First Trailer For “Django Unchained”

Like many of us, I had written off Quentin Tarantino after his excesses got the best of him with Kill Bill Vol. 2 & Grindhouse, but Inglourious Basterds got me right back on the bandwagon.

Here’s the first trailer for his latest film Django Unchained starring Oscar winners Jamie Foxx & Christoph Waltz, as well as Oscar nominees Leonardo DiCaprio, Samuel L. Jackson & Bruce Dern, and with the exception of that ridiculous tagline (Django is off the chain), this looks pretty killer.

Django Unchained opens in the US on Christmas Day.

First Images Of Tarantino’s “Django Unchained”

The first images of Quentin Tarantino’s latest film have hit the web. The film, which Tarantino dubs a “southern” rather than a western, centers around a slave (Jamie Foxx) who makes a deal with a German bounty hunter (Christoph Waltz) to free him and search for his wife (Kerry Washington) in exchange for vital information to settle his score.

The images above are of Jamie Foxx as the title character Django, Christoph Waltz as the German bounty hunter Dr. King Schultz and Leonardo DiCaprio as the brutal plantation owner Calvin Candie

Django Unchained is slated for a Christmas Day release.
