“Chrono Trigger” For iOS / Android

Chrono Trigger is one of those games that has really stood the test of time and Square Enix is proving that by releasing it on iPhone and iPad on December 9th.

So far there isn’t any word on whether it’ll be making its way stateside, but my guess is it’s only a matter of time.

Sorry for the puns.

Here’s Your Life Running on GLaDOS

Well, not exactly your life since we aren’t all a bunch of models, but it’s still a good example of what a hilarious pain-in-the-ass GLaDOS would be if she somehow invaded our smartphones.

Also, GLaDOS may try to kill you.

Invasion of Padzilla: A Whale Of A Case

This “case” by Crunchy Logistics screams “Go big or go home!” The appropriately named Padzilla provides a huge, interactive screen for your iPad or iPhone. The units are custom made and can go as ginormous as 150” diagonal! It’s a simple plug and play situation and no jail-breaking is required to use Padzilla. It’s also possible to connect your favorite gaming consoles or computers.

It seems a bit much to me, but I see this as a great way to play iPad games and nothing else. Plus, you need some serious cashflow. Let’s just say you can tile your wall with iPads to equal the cost of this monster.

Space Invaders by Case Scenario

Space Invaders is a true icon from the 80’s arcade, so take a trip down memory lane with these Space Invaders cases from Case Scenario. This collection features the colorful characters from the classic retro arcade game of your childhood days so you can take the memory with you while protecting your iDevice.

Available only for iPhone, iPad and MacBook starting from $42 to $85 in both hard and soft cases, these cases are now available at select retailers around the world or online at case-scenario.com.

“Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions” To Be Released On iPhone August 4th

According to Famitsu, one of the best strategy RPG games of our generation, Final Fantasy Tactics, will be hitting the iPhone app store later this week on August 4th in Japan. It will be priced at ¥1,800. Though the game is only for the iPhone (3GS and 4 versions), it is expected to be compatible with the iPad in the Fall.

If you’re curious about how FF Tactics manages on the iPhone’s touchscreen, the video above shows gameplay footage. The funtionality seems smooth enough, with the player able to manually rotate classes and place units on the battlefields with their finger, for example. And the soundtrack is still fantastic.

Update: FF Tactics: The War of the Lions will indeed be releasing domestically ($15.99) and in Europe (12.99) on Aug. 4th as well!

Seems like a good move to me. Not entirely sure how successful it will be, but it’s definitely in line with DC’s recent commitment to embrace the digital comics medium.

Minecraft Headed To Android Devices This Year, iOS Sometime After

In a surprising turn of events, the indie smash hit, Minecraft, is going to be making its way onto mobile devices. That in itself is not very surprising given the creator, Marcus “Notch” Persson, had stated the title might see a release outside the PC.

No, the surprise announcement is that Android owners will finally be able to shove an exclusive major game in front of iOS owners. At least for a little while. Being officially shown off at an event at E3 starting June 7th, the Android version of Minecraft will be released before iPod Touch/iPhone owners, although no official announcement has been made about release date or pricing yet.

The New Life of the Portable Game Console (Part 3)

This is the third article of the trilogy series of “The New Life of the Portable Game Console”. The first segment covered problems in the portable gaming sector, the second segment covered ways to possibly fix them and the third focuses on the future.

Final Thoughts

In this final segment, I want to look at a couple of different aspects that I have ignored so far: Apple’s good moves and the future of the portable game console.

The New Life of the Portable Game Console: Part 2

In the first part of The New Life of the Portable Game Console, we took a look at the problems facing the DS and PSP and examined the rise to power of the iPhone and iPod. Enough gloom, it’s time to look at the potential advantages that the two companies could take into the fight of the next generation of portable fun.

Countering the “i”nvincible Apple

Apple’s steam rolling juggernaut of the iPhone is bowling over the competition. There’s no denying the adverse effects the bite-sized apps and value meal games have had. The portability, form factor, and convenience have come to play larger roles than Nintendo and Sony could have possibly anticipated. What’s the lowly DS and PSP to do? There are multiple ways to combat Apple in the power struggle…

Geek Spotlight: The New Life of the Portable Game Console: Part 1

Making The Argument Against “i” Gaming

Just over a decade ago, we saw more diversity in the handheld gaming market. There were the likes of Sega, SNK, Bandai, and more at least attempting to take a piece of the market. Nowadays, it’s down to just three major players. Of course, the major hitters are Apple’s iPhone/iPod line, Nintendo’s DS and 3DS, and Sony with the PSP and NGP (PSP2).

Oh how the times have changed from the innocent 90’s.

Apple’s so-called “gaming efforts” have produced the bite-sized diversions we now call “games”. If I sound a little bit unhappy with the current situation, you’ll have to forgive me. It’s not that I don’t like any games on the “i” devices. After I play Angry Birds for a half hour, I just don’t feel satisfied by the game I just played. It’s like trying to eat at a fast-food restaurant when you’re craving a steak. It’ll fill you up and it tastes okay but you’ll still want that 16oz New York strip loin after. I think we really need to identify the problems that the portables are facing before we can even think about possible solutions…

Probably the most useful app you will ever download

“It tries to find out what the letters are and then looks in the dictionary. Then it draws the words back on the screen in translation. The translation isn’t perfect, but it gets the point across.” via

So far World Lens is only Spanish to English and vice versa. Hopefully they will touch on more languages. This will surely help when I finally win the lotto and travel the world ^_^. Or at least save me money on buying language learning programs =P.
