I wonder how many can it would take to build a Luigi.

“Tropes vs. Women In Video Games” Begins With The “Damsel In Distress”

Feminist critic Anita Sarkeesian has had an interesting road in creating her new video series entitled Tropes vs. Women In Video Games. Her Kickstarter campaign was highly successful, garnering over a $160,000, well past her original $6,000 goal. It also raised the ire of many gamers critical of her project before seeing any of the final results.

Several months later, Sarkeesian has completed her first video of the series beginning with the “Damsel in Distress.” I’d highly recommend giving it a watch, even if you aren’t a gamer, because it goes into some of the long history of the overused, outdated trope that can be commonly found in… well, everything.

Sarkeesian’s video also reminds us of the important fact that while we may enjoy our favorite mediums, that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t stop being critical of what we are consuming.

Geek Spotlight: Cantankerous Old Mario

Realization is defined as “an act of becoming fully aware of something as a fact or the fulfillment or achievement of something desired or anticipated.” We are all aware of that “aha” moment when it strikes, but the question afterward becomes: “How has this impacted my perspective?”

My realization: Western video game developers have eclipsed eastern developers in every sense of innovation, imagination, and progress.

This came to me recently when I played Super Mario Galaxy 2 back-to-back with Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time. As I was shredding apart a swarm of oncoming enemies with a hand blaster, strafing, jumping, and swinging Ratchet’s wrench, it hit me: “This is the future of 3D platform gaming.”

Skeptics might be quick to retort the contrary, but allow me to elucidate. This isn’t in the vein of committing either title in terms of “good” or “bad,” but rather how one better represents a future and another represents the past.

Game Review: New Super Mario Bros. 2

Nintendo and the 3DS have had some ridiculous levels of success lately with their steady stream of Mario-based releases, like Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7. This fall, Nintendo is looking to copy their success by unleashing the one-two punch of more Mario games.

Beginning with the traditional side-scroller New Super Mario Bros. 2, can the 3DS count on Mario’s golden touch or is the Princess in another kingdom?

Nintendo Dates “Paper Mario”; Delays “Luigi’s Mansion”

The Nintendo lineup of portable games is pretty well packed full of great releases through to the end of the year and now they’ve announced when we can play some of those games.

The two biggest games to get firm release dates are Paper Mario: Sticker Star, which is headed to store shelves on November 11 and Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask, which will be released on October 28.

Unfortunately, it’s not all good news, as Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon was a casualty and will be delayed to 2013. You can be sure Nintendo will update its status in the near future.
