Weekend Remix: Super Star Sounds Part 2

By: The OverClocked Plaid Muffins
Based On: Clash! Gourmet Race from Kirby Super Star
Original Composer: Jun Ishikawa

Welcome back for another edition of the Weekend Remix. Last week we featured Milky Way Wishes: A Kirby Super Star Tribute, the latest arrangement album from OverClocked ReMix, starring everyone’s favorite enemy eater.

While last week’s remix focused on a spacey ride though electronica chiptune melodies, this week we’re going through some ska. The OverClocked Plaid Muffins are actually an all-star team of OC ReMix arrangers, remixers and musicians.

Included are: Level 99, PrototypeRaptor, LuIzA, Swann, Xenon Odyssey, Cyril the Wolf, AMT and Avaris.

Taking the super catchy Clash! Gourmet Race, this cover still infects the ears like a pop gem, but has enough energetic force to get you jumping around the room like it’s late 90’s Warped Tour.

Be sure to download Milky Way here.

Weekend Remix: Super Star Sounds Part 1

Song: Spelunking In Space
By: Hylian Lemon
Based On: Cocoa Cave From Kirby Super Star
Original Composers: Jun Ishikawa, Dan Miyakawa

It looks like we’re visiting everyone’s favorite pink-puff superstar for this edition of the Weekend Remix.

The talented bunch at OC ReMix recently released a new album dedicated to Nintendo’s Kirby. Titled Milky Way Wishes: A Kirby Super Star Tribute, the album is a remix love letter to the classic Kirby Super Star for the Super Nintendo.

This marks the second OC ReMix album dedicated to Kirby as well as their 38th arrangement. It was also an album that’s taken eight years to become reality. But when you download the album — which you can do right now — you’ll quickly notice the amount of time only increased efforts to produce one of the best arrangements.

Not only are you getting an awesome mix of rock, electronica, hip-hop, and even ska remixes, you’re also getting a ton of artwork. Milky Way Wishes features some special storybook-style artwork also dedicated to the game. But for the sake of this article, we’re focusing on the music, specifically Hylian Lemon’s remix of Cocoa Cave.

Spelunking In Space still maintains the energetic drive of the original. But instead of being driven by jungle bass and drums like in the original Cocoa Cave, this remix is dominated by chiptune melodies that seem to rocket into space. That is, until the two minute mark, where the song seems to slow to a zero gravity float before crashing back down to earth.

This is simply a fun ride on a star.

Check back next week as we’ll take another look at tune from this stellar album.

Until next week…GO Party!

Weekend Remix: Indoctrinated Sounds

Song: Saren’s Prayer
By: Mazerdude
Based On: Saren From Mass Effect
Original Composers: David Kates, Jack Wall, Richard Jacques and Sam Hulick

It’s time to jump through a Mass Relay for this week’s Weekend Remix. Maybe it’s the effects from last week’s remix, but I’m rummaging through some villain vibes. So OC Remix’s BaddAss: Boss Themes has been playing in my MP3 player for the past couple of weeks, with of course a few tracks getting the repeat treatment.

Among those is Mazerdude’s amazing Saren’s Prayer. Based off the character theme from Mass Effect, this remix manages to stick to the Turian’s awesome air, while also keeping things fresh.

Saren’s Prayer plays like a galactic death march, as the tribal percussion drums in a militant rhythm. And with the synths sounding downright sinister, you’d think that Reapers were just around the corner.

You can download BadAss here to get your bad guy remix fix.

Weekend Remix: Neo Max Mix

Song: One-Hit KO (Bye Esaka Mix)
By: WillRock
Based On: Good Bye ESAKA From King Of Fighters XIII
Original Composers: Iku Mizutani, Makoto Suehiro, Tasuku Mizutani, Tetsuhiro Ogawa, Tomonao Niiya, Toshihiko Hiraguchi

Put the fight gloves on because this week, we’re pulling a remix based off of SNK Playmore’s King Of Fighters XIII. While the sublime Good Bye ESAKA was a rocking tune in the original game, it seems to get a bit of a flashback feel from WillRock.

The remixer spins ESAKA through a swirling circle of 2D beat-em-up and Neo Geo synths, recalling the early techno sounds of Streets Of Rage’s Yuzo Koshiro and Gecko Yamori. He seems to also pull from their professional sounds. This is simply a song that would easily felt at home on any of the earlier King Of Fighters.

If you’d like to hear more, check out OverClocked ReMix’s latest album, Apex 2013:Straight To The Top. With remixes based on songs from titles like Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition, Super Smash Bros. and of course, King Of Fighters. Perfect for all your virtual beat downs.

Spanish Jitters (Jungle Jitter GBA)

by David Wise feat Robin Beanland
album Donkey Kong Country 3 :Double The Trouble!

Weekend Remix: We Can’t Stop Here, This Is Kong Country Part 2

Song: Spanish Jitters
By: David Wise And Robin Beanland
Based On: Jungle Jitter From Donkey Kong Country 3 GBA
Original Composer: David Wise

This week, we’re taking one more trip through Kong Country for the Weekend Remix. In case you didn’t know, OC Remix just released their third Donkey Kong album, Donkey Kong Country 3: Double The Trouble!, a collection of remixes based off of Donkey Kong Country 3.

This time, we’re featuring Spanish Jitters, an almost RARE case where the original composers decides to remix their own song.

David Wise was the original composer for Donkey Kong Country, Donkey Kong Country 2, and also composed the GBA version of the game. Couple that work with Robin Beanland, whose work has also included Donkey Kong Country and Goldeneye, and it’s easy to see why this arrangement has such a professional edge. Besides, who better to take a song in a new direction than the original creator right?

The original tune, Jungle Jitter, sounded like a fun upbeat run-through of jungle tree tops. In other words, it was perfect for Donkey Kong Country. Its Spanish cousin is just as fun, but sonically, it’s a different type of ape. Spanish Jitters lives up to its name, opening with some classic guitar playing, but it soon evolves into what sounds like a lively street band trying its best to turn a party from ten to eleven. A little past the middle of the song, some more modern touches come into play with the song flirting with a straightforward techno beat.

This won’t give you the jitters, but its funky vibe may cause your feet to move.

You can download Double The Trouble for free here.

album Donkey Kong Country 3: Double the Trouble!

Weekend Remix: We Can’t Stop Here, This Is Kong Country Part 1

Song: Kingfisher’s Stream
By: halc, Mattias Haggstrom, Gerdt
Based On: Cascade Capers from Donkey Kong Country 3
Original Composer: Eveline Novakovic

The talented bunch at OverClocked Remix decided to visit Kong Country a third time, resulting in their latest album Donkey Kong Country 3: Double The Trouble! Considering that with this release you’re getting a barrel of awesome music, it makes sense to say that this album is Bananas. That’s B-A-N-A—okay, I already regret referencing Miss Stefani’s hit.

But can you blame me when Double gives you five and a half hours of remixes based on Donkey Kong Country 3 from a countless number of genres? Also, when you’ve got Donkey Kong Country composer David Wise featuring RARE’s Robin Beanland on the album with an original arrangement, you know you’re in for something very special.

And I’m sure you’re not going to regret listening to this collaboration from halc, Mattias Haggstrom and Gerdt.

Kingfisher’s Stream is an electronica gem that mostly deals in house rhythm beats, although it does manage to sneak in a few dubby vibes into the party later. It’s an explosion of melodious hooks that never seem to end. Think of it as if witnessing a fireworks display; as one exciting part fades, a new one suddenly lights up to take its place.

It would almost be disorienting if there wasn’t a headphone-shaking bass line, and drums that tempt you into some serious head nodding to direct it. At it’s core, Kingfisher’s Stream is a path of twists and turns centered by the original piece’s audio road, but filled with enough innovation to place you somewhere new.

We’ll be back next time with a look at Wise and Beanland’s arrangement! In the meantime, download the free album here.

Weekend Remix: Dreamy Island

Song: Islands in the Sky
By: Avaris
Based On: Corridor of Time from Chrono Trigger
Original Composers: Nobou Uematsu, Noriko Matsueda and Yasunori Mitsuda

If the holiday rush has got you feeling a bit frantic, or the pressures of finals are about to make you blow up like a short-fused powder keg, then my friend, it’s time to relax.

Luckily Avaris has got you covered for this week with this remix of Chrono Trigger’s memorable “Corridor Of Time.” Sure, there’s been tons of attempts to remix this tune by many, but Avaris supplies listeners with such a stark, yet beautiful remix that makes it feel like you’re floating towards a mirage of sky islands.

There’s a subtle pulse to Avaris’ notes that gradually grow into such a lush arrangement, tethered by a dominant bass, and vibrant percussion.

If this doesn’t make you want to take a break from the world for a bit, I don’t know what will.

Weekend Remix: 150 By Sea

Song: Pokémon Red Version Spume
By: Rozovian
Based On: Sea from Pokémon Red Version
Original Composer: Junichi Masuda

In recognition of the recent release of Pokémon Black and White Version 2, I decided to pull a tune from everyone’s favorite pocket monster related game. Well, that’s everyone except for PETA of course.

Anyway, to help you on your badge collecting journey, this week’s remix once again comes from the amazing OC Remix album: The Missingno Tracks. Based off of the song, Sea, Rozovian decided to craft a remix that successfully combines two different musical vibes.

Listeners initially get hit with some deep sea ambient married to some thinking-man island music. But right when you’re ready to pull out your copy of The Old Man And The Sea for hammock reading, the song shifts into what could only be described as a bubbly and whimsical trip to a catchy 16-bit Disney sing-along that never saw the light of day.

This song manages to go from The Hunt For Red October to The Little Mermaid for SNES. And that would be a jarring transition if Rozovian didn’t make it work without successfully gelling the two styles.

Running The Cyberpunks

by Ffmusic Dj

Weekend Remix: Dancing In The Shadows

Song: Running The Cyberpunks
By: Ffmusic Dj
Based On: Uptown from Shadowrun from the SNES
Original Composer: Marshall Parker

I’m pretty excited about the return of Shadowrun to virtual gaming. Not knocking the 2007 attempt, but the upcoming titles do show promise at tickling the fans’ bones of the older gaming titles, and generally the franchise. The Kickstarter Campaign for the upcoming Shadowrun game and MMO seem to have been successful. Yet, until the triumphant return of the cyberpunk fantasy, we have a remix from Ffmusic Dj to tide us over.

Uptown was already a cool tune with a strong groove, and Dj’s straightforward remix really doesn’t change the feel. In fact, if anything, Dj has successfully reminded you what’s to love about the orginal.

A strong bass, along with some progressive synths help make this hard trance tune the soundtrack to a dance party in a cyberpunk playground.

album Final Fantasy: Random Encounter

Weekend Remix: Nothing Random About That Guitar

Song: Roaming…Please Wait
By: BONKERS
Based On: Main Title Theme And Gurgu Volcano From Final Fantasy
Original Composer: Nobou Uematsu

This week, we’re spotlighing a song from another OC Remix album that will cause your coolness to level up: OC’s recently released Final Fantasy: Random Encounter.

If you haven’t had the chance to download this gem, I may have to question your sanity. I mean, it’s not often that we get Final Fantasy songs dancing around metal and rock, with the exception of the Black Mages of course.

This is what Random Encounter offers, and believe me when I say that this week’s chosen remix is definitely a highlight. What’s great about Roaming is how natural Nobou’s song sounds through thundering drums and bass, and an electric guitar riffs so powerful, they could make a party of white mages breeze through the game with such ease.

Maybe heavy is the wrong word to apply to its sounds. And maybe it isn’t. One could say it’s just simply powerful, even progressive at times. It’s like Dungeons And Dragons metal for the fearless, yet hopeful adventurer; a bard’s song with the amps turned to 11.

Again, if you get the chance, please check out Random Encounter.

Weekend Remix: Aim For The Stars

Song: Star Fox 64 Star King
By: DaMonz
Based On: Battle 3 and Starwolf’s Theme from Star Fox 64
Original Composer: Hajime Wakai and Koji Kondo

Fly all you want, space foxes, but there’s no way you’ll be able to shake this week’s remix. Not even a barrel roll will do.

DaMonz decided to tackle a Nintendo space classic with his Star Fox 64 remix. Based on the songs, Battle 3 and Starwolf’s theme, you’ll quickly notice that his take shares the two original tunes’ urgency. Yet, it’s definitely its own animal that leaves us with a happy marriage of deep galaxy ambiance and intense jungle groove.

At first, Star King’s opening sort of coasts like a ship slowly drifting in space. The inclusion of the game’s sound bytes is a very nice touch, setting up that particular urgency that dominates most of the song.

After roughly a minute, the drums begin their rapid assault, skirting around quick drum ‘n bass territory. Meanwhile, everything has shifted to light speed thanks to the song’s fast spirals of synths and piano.

This isn’t a homage to one of the best games in the Star Fox series, it’s the soundtrack to fast and furious space dog fights.

Weekend Remix: Just Listen To Teacher!

Song: A Lesson From Teacher
By: Anti-Syne
Original Song: Chop Chop Master Onion’s RAP from PaRappa the Rapper
Original Composer: Masaya Matsuura, Rodney A. Greenblat, Tuttle & Dynamo Laboratory, Yoshihisa Suzuki

Welcome, one and all, to the Weekend Remix, the one music stop that says, “You gotta believe.”

Believe in what? Well how about the fact that it’s possible to successfully warp a music rhythm rap tune into an electronica remix. That’s what remixer Anti-Syne seemed to accomplish with his take of the classic PaRappa The Rapper Tune Chop Chop Master Onion’s RAP.

Normally, O.G. music fans of the game would be ready to mob with their Internet pitchforks, but they may find themselves bobbing their heads instead.

Besides distorted vocals of Chop Chop Onion’s lines and a heavily altered bass line tethering this remix to the original, there is nothing else familiar about it. That doesn’t mean it’s not as fun or catchy as the original. Anti-Syne’s layers of synth—which either dance, pulsate, or stretch—have that same carefree bounce found in the original song. Yet, it also adds in this sense of urgency that makes it sound less like a level BGM and more of an electronica soundtrack to a training montage.

Weekend Remix: Chilly Toads

Song: Ice Cave Dynamo
By: Joshua Morse
Based On: Ice Cavern Level from Battletoads
Original Composer: David Wise

Watch out for the Dark Queen’s minions for this week’s Weekend Remix.

In these parts, Joshua Morse is no stranger to the Weekend Remix. In fact, he was actually featured with his collaboration with DCT for Apparitions Of A Clock Tower, a very dark groove take on the Clock Tower portion of Castlevania: Symphony Of The Night.

This time, Morse is flying on a speeder bike solo for this remix to the Battletoads Ice Cavern level.

And what he’s created is a house techno remix that is simply cool. Excuse the pun, but the song really is a chill expansion of a catchy 8-bit original. Morse managed to build such a progressive audio world around the original hook and make it seem so easy. Audio-wise, he’s truly a master of building up and around to a excellent pay-off. This would sound right at in a icy lounge or a Battletoads HD update. Get on it Rare.

Weekend Remix: Remix Was Super Effective

Song: Shades Of Red
By: halc
Based On: Theme Of Pallet Town from Pokemon Red Version
Original Composer: Junichi Masuda

This week, Shades Of Red, I choose you for the Weekend Remix!

Sometimes, the purpose of a great remix isn’t to completely transform our favorite tunes in a different light, but to expand it, while somehow keeping its roots intact.

Halc’s Pallet Town remix manages to accomplish that feat easily.

It begins, convincing listeners that you’re in store for a chiptune recreation before expanding into a band backed remix.

It’s as cheerful and bright as the original tune, and manages to pluck at the nostalgic heart immensely. Listening to this on repeat has done nothing but bring up memories of playing Pokemon Red on the Super Gameboy adaptor on the old TV, in between bouts of catching up on the hit anime version.

And hopefully, this tune will manage to do the same for you.

If you’d like to hear more Pokemon-related remixes, check the OC Remix album Pokemon: The Missingno Tracks here.
