GO Spotlight: Is It Life Or Death For The PS Vita?

image

When Sony announced the PlayStation Vita a little under two years ago at E3 2011, gamers were electric with excitement over the first handheld that seemed to be able to truly match the experience of home console gaming.

Fast forward to just past the first anniversary of the PS Vita where things are looking very grim. Sony seems to have all but given up on saving their powerful game machine, instead opting to focus their efforts on the upcoming PS4, while surrendering the portable market to Nintendo’s 3DS.

Now, I know what you’re thinking, but I’m not here to recite every failure of the Vita. I’d rather talk gamers out of the worst possible use of their precious dollars in gaming currently.

The rumor mill has been abuzz lately with speculation that Sony is abandoning their successful Dualshock brand of controllers in favor of something a little bit different. Sony Releases New PlayStation Teaser

In an apparent sign of big things to come, Sony has recently launched a PlayStation teaser on their YouTube page.

Titled as “#PlayStation2013,” the 45-second teaser lives up to its name, ambiguously teasing the shapes of its controller buttons for most of it, then revealing the date Feb. 20, 2013. While mysterious in nature, and despite the fact that Sony commented that they’ll only reveal their new console after Microsoft reveals theirs, many believe that the date will be Sony’s official leap into next-gen gaming.

What do you all think?

“Killzone: Mercenary” Debut Gameplay Trailer

It’s been hard to recommend a PS Vita lately with its bare library and releases that have all but dried up. Following the big promises made by Sony at its debut, it finally looks like a shooter may finally take advantage of the dual thumbsticks on the portable.

Killzone: Mercenary looks to capture much of the series’ trademark action, offering a futuristic, gritty feel to portable gamers. Pulling from events of the second and third games of the series, the game will be attempting to suck-in new players while appealing to fans of the franchise.

Killzone: Mercenary hits store shelves September 17, 2013.

“Dead or Alive 5 Plus” Coming To PS Vita In Early 2013

Announced during IGN’s IPL 5, head of Team Ninja Yosuke Hayashi unveiled that a PS Vita version of DOA 5 would be coming early next year.

The new game will be titled Dead or Alive 5 Plus and will be the second foray for the main series on portable consoles after a very good showing with Dead or Alive Dimensions on the 3DS (find our review of it here). DOA 5 Plus will apparently include new features not in the original release, although none were announced at the time.

Also mentioned was an update to the PS3 and 360 versions of Dead or Alive 5, which should be coming in the near future.

“Tokyo Jungle” Thinks Wild Animals Are Taking Over On September 25th

Tokyo Jungle is one of those “only in Japan” games that, as weird as it is, is strangely appealing to look at and really makes gamers want give it a try.

Taking the role of one of over 50 animals, players will try to not only stay alive in the concrete jungle of Tokyo, but try to thrive and form packs to dominate the wild. The game will be made up of two different modes, single player and survival, but the only thing that will really matter in the end is how long you can stay alive as a monkey.

Tokyo Jungle will be released September 25th on PSN for $15.

“The Last of Us” Is Willing To Do Anything To Survive

Perhaps the best trailer to come out of Gamescom today is from Naughty Dog’s upcoming game, The Last of Us

Desperately doing anything to survive, Joel and Ellie are out on the road and minding their own business until they get ambushed by other survivors. What follows is a thrilling example of the grit and tenacity that gamers have drooled over since the game was first unveiled earlier this year. And the finale is a chilling example of the harsh world Joel and Ellie are living inside of.

The Last of Us is expected to be released in 2013 on the PlayStation 3.

“Call of Duty: Black Ops Declassified” First Trailer From Gamescom

The biggest shooter franchise in the world is headed to the Vita this year, but it’s looking pretty rusty on Sony’s portable.

Being developed by Nihilistic Games—responsible for the mediocre games PlayStation Move Heroes and Resistance: Burning Skies—the shooter appears to be a port of the two-year-old Black Ops and is looking decidedly last-gen, but is trying to make up with it by bringing lots of portable action.

Also announced was 4 vs. 4 online multiplayer with the staple modes like Team Deathmatch and Kill Confirmed. Classic maps are being tailored to fit the smaller Vita and new maps will be added into the mix.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Declassified will hit store shelves November 2012 on the PlayStation Vita.
