Weekend Remix: Go Go Gadget Thunder!

Song: Gadget/Thundercats
By: CAI
Based On: Themes and Sounds from Inspector Gadget And Thundercats (80s)
Original Composers: Haim Saban, Shuki Levy and James Lipton

We’re taking an ride through the 80s, trance style, for this week’s Weekend Remix.

It’s probably safe to say that any self-proclaimed child of the 80s or early 90s can hum the theme songs to the original Thundercats and Inspector Gadget cartoons.

The two stand out more than Cloud Strife at a Happy Heroes’ Convention. With that being said, to somehow incorporate either song into a techno audio arena is a cool idea. To combine both into a single song is mad.

But in the skillful hands of the London based CAI, the idea just sounds cool when you actually hear it. Listening to his classic Gadget/Thundercats mix is like speeding towards the 80s in a DeLorean, while bumping hard trance records through the speakers. Past and future collide at break neck electronica speeds.

And the song is just as fun and attention grabbing as the toons themselves.

Until next weekend… GO GO Gadget Party!

Weekend Remix: Friends From Out Of Town

Song: Peeps (Dinosaucers Remix)
By: Phili D & Bmkikibeats
Based On: Theme from Dinosaucers
Original Composers: Shuki Levy And Haim Saban

Despite what Dinosaucers might have you believe, going out in the woods will not result in meeting Dinosaur Aliens. In my experience, I’ve only met with tree limbs, (in my hair) owls (also in my hair), and mud (I think you can guess where).

But that’s okay because thanks to the short-lived series, we wound up with one of the catchiest 80s cartoon themes, chock full of light-show lasers and a one word-chorus sung as if it were trying to fill an arena.

Phili D & Bmkikibeats already win points for even attempting to craft a song with this theme. Luckily, it’s a pretty catchy mix, transporting the original into a hip-hop shell.

While Phili D manages to cleverly take the concept of “friends” from the show and make it his own for Peeps, it’s Bmkikibeats that really shines as he manages to sample the theme, transforming this song into a hip-hop anthem about your buddies’ misadventures.

It’s the perfect soundtrack to Phili D’s lyrics.

Weekend Remix: Stark Records

Song: The Iron Man Trilogy Remix
By: Mike Relm
Based On: Iron Man from Black Sabbath and sounds and clips from Iron Man (film)
Original Composers: Ozzy Osbourne, Geezer Butler,Bill Ward, and Tony Iommi

It’s no secret that most fans were left impressed with the latest Iron Man film. The movie not only managed to smash box office records, but it also garnered some praise on the level of Marvel’s The Avengers.

It served as a perfect film to properly open the summer movie season. With Stark’s solo film adventures now a trilogy, it would make sense for Mike Relm’s remix to document that fact.

Relm’s mix takes the Sabbath classic into a techno realm, sprinkling in chopped soundbites and scenes as if a DJ is playing doctor on the trilogy.

It’s a fun addition to the films.

Weekend Remix: Rapper’s Bluff

Song: Lupe Fiasco/Trigun Mashup
By: redmtal
Based On: Big Bluff from Trigun and I’m Beamin’ from Lupe Fiasco
Original Composer: Tsuneo Imahori

This edition of The Weekend Remix is worth at least 60,000,000,000$$, but I swear it didn’t level a city.

Maybe it doesn’t make much sense to do a mashup between one of the world’s lyrically strong rappers in the game and the soundtrack to a Mr. Vash The Stampede. Or maybe it does. One could argue that Fiasco’s deep bars are a perfect compliment to the layered story and characters of Trigun.

But however you wanna slice it, you’ve got to admit that this mashup between Lupe’s I’m Beamin’ and Trigun’s Big Bluff seems tailor made for each other. Interstellar cool crashes onto a dust ball planet of gun battles and sandstorms in redmtal’s mashup, making this sound like something between Danger Mouse, Imahori, and gunfight Westerns.

S3RL - 'Neon Genesis' - Pulse Remix [Relentless Digital] Out Now!!! @ Hardcore Addiction 6

Weekend Remix: Cruel Dance Thesis

Song: ‘Neon Genesis’ Pulse Remix
By: Pulse and DJ S3RL
Based On: ”Cruel Angel’s Thesis” from Neon Genesis Evangelion and Neon Genesis from S3RL
Original Composers:  Yoko Takahashi, Neko Oikawa, Hidetoshi Satō Toshiyuki Ōmori

Prep your Eva-Unit for this edition of the Weekend Remix, as we’re diving into the music of Neon Genesis Evangelion.

“Cruel Angel Thesis” is quite a unique opening for Neon Genesis Evangelion if you think about it. A show whose theme, character, and story-wise is about as heavy as a city-destroying mech would usually warrant a somber or serious sounding opening, at least musically speaking. The lyrics are another story.

Instead, thanks to the insistence of television execs, the show got a hard driving but catchy J-pop shell.

DJ S3RL’s initial remix placed the song on a hardcore techno bent. And thanks to Pulse’ remix of that remix (more layers than Inception at this point folks), the song manages to go further down the techno rabbit hole, speeding up the pitch of the sampled original and layering it against the backdrop setting of some fun acid warehouse rave.

Whether it serves as the soundtrack to an ambitious AMV or a track to get the cosplaying crowd going, Pulse’s remix of this tune is a definite must hear.

Weekend Remix: Final Rhyme Tactics

Song: Tactics
By: Random Aka Mega Ran
Based On: Decisive Battle from Final Fantasy Tactics
Original Composers: Masaharu Iwata and Hitoshi Sakimoto

Life is often like a tactical role playing game. Instead of rushing in head first to take it on, sometimes one must strategize and plan their moves, while also adapting to any new challenges that come your way. That’s why this week we’re taking a trip to the kingdom of Ivalice for this edition of the Weekend Remix.

Final Fantasy Tactics may have taken the Final Fantasy franchise into a different gameplay style, but the game still had many of the same thematic and production factors found in any of Square hallmark series, including the music.

Decisive Battle lives up to its name as it’s a dramatic symphony that has just the right amount of punch — especially in the percussion department — to make whatever fight it soundtracks seem as if any move you make has to count.

Through the talented words and production hands of Random, none of  Decisive Battle’s life or death flair is lost. In fact, Random manages to make it seem like a perfect fit, serving as the perfect hard sounding backdrop to his impeccable lyrics. As you’ll hear, the rapper has no problem switching up his flow while making it seem so effortless.

With Ran’s class abilities as a rapper and producer at the top, consider this remix mastered.

If you’d like to hear more Mega Ran, check out Time and Space, his latest EP TRAP, or… really check out any of his many albums and Eps. You can’t go wrong. And for those in the UK, be sure to catch him on tour

Weekend Remix: All About The Boats And Dragons

Song: Whur Muh Boats At? (Remix)
By: Adam WarRock & Applefrog
Based On: Whur Muh Boats At?
Original Composer: Applefrog

Are those dragons I see on the horizon? Then that could only mean that HBO’s Game Of Thrones has returned. The show kicked off its third season last Sunday, earning millions of views.

And to celebrate its return, artist Adam WarRock decided to jump on board Applefrog’s hilarious yet catchy Whur Muh Boats At? Released last year, Applefrog pointed out the song was his “thoughts on season two” of the show.

While the beat and the video are wonderful enough alone to get stuck in your head, the addition of WarRock takes this song to another level. Rappers often jump on original songs. That’s nothing new. But it takes true talent to make such a seamless fit, which WarRock has absolutely no problem doing. Lyrically, it’s almost as if WarRock was made for this song.

Be sure to bump this one loud in the stereo right before the next episode.

Weekend Remix: Super Star Sounds Part 2

Song: Ska Buffet (All You Can Eat Dirty Version)
By: The OverClocked Plaid Muffins
Based On: Clash! Gourmet Race from Kirby Super Star
Original Composer: Jun Ishikawa

Welcome back for another edition of the Weekend Remix. Last week we featured Milky Way Wishes: A Kirby Super Star Tribute, the latest arrangement album from OverClocked ReMix, starring everyone’s favorite enemy eater.

While last week’s remix focused on a spacey ride though electronica chiptune melodies, this week we’re going through some ska. The OverClocked Plaid Muffins are actually an all-star team of OC ReMix arrangers, remixers and musicians.

Included are: Level 99, PrototypeRaptor, LuIzA, Swann, Xenon Odyssey, Cyril the Wolf, AMT and Avaris.

Taking the super catchy Clash! Gourmet Race, this cover still infects the ears like a pop gem, but has enough energetic force to get you jumping around the room like it’s late 90’s Warped Tour.

Be sure to download Milky Way here.

Weekend Remix: Smooth Ride Through Space

Song: Winds Of Space
By: KazuhirO (Kazuhiro Hayate)
Based On: Hiru no Tsuki from Outlaw Star
Original Composers: Akino Arai and Kow Otani

Get your Grappler Ship ready as we’re taking a nice ride through space for this edition of the Weekend Remix.

Outlaw Star. It’s an anime that pulls at the memories of many who practically grew up on Toonami. A space-western wrapped in a science-fantasy shell, from the characters to the weaponry, this show simply could not fail.

And it’s why when one of the ending themes, Hiru no Tsuki, plays that fans hearts swell with teary nostalgia.Okay, that’s part of the reason. The other is that Hiru is simply an amazingly somber and beautiful song.

The true beauty is rooted in its simplicity. KazuhirO decided to change things up with this remix, speeding up the famous vocals and setting them up for a trip through a smooth RnB sound.

Nothing could ever be better than the original tune, but even with that in mind, KazuhirO’s  intergalactic RnB remix is a pretty cool take.

Weekend Remix: Infiltrating Hyrule Castle

Song: Hyrule Castle
By: Nostalgia
Based On: Hyrule Castle and Sound Effect from The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
Original Composer: Koji Kondo

Brace your shield cause we’re taking another trip back to Hyrule for this edition of the Weekend Remix.

Personally, I’m not the biggest fan of dubstep-related songs, especially when it comes to Geek or Otaku-related remixes. Too often I’ve heard a lot of artists simply use game sound effects or a bits of the original tune as a minor speed bump until the bass drops into self-indulgent wubzy shenanigans.

But Nostalgia’s mix has managed to hook shot my heart, building a clever immersion between Koji’s original composition and his own audio playground.

The same intensity found in the original drives this mix, as Koji’s work easily melts into this aggressive barrage of electronic attacks and spazzy bass. And the sound effects from the game, while adding a certain flair, seem to recreate the feel of venturing into the dangers that Hyrule Castle held.

Weekend Remix: Music In Disguise

Song: Transformers Classic Theme Orchestra
By: Ominous Voice
Based On: Score from Transformers (2007) film and Transformers (1985) Cartoon Theme
Original Composers: Ford Kinder, Ann Bryant, Joe Bacal and Steve Jablonsky

Looks like the Autobots and Decepticons are dressing in their orchestral best for this edition of the Weekend Remix.

When Michael Bay’s first Transformers film hit the scene, I found myself kind of disappointed in the soundtrack. Not that it was bad — Linkin Park’s “What I’ve Done?” did strangely fit to my ear — as Steve Jablonsky’s score was actually pretty good, but I completely would have nerded out if the composer had managed to sneak in the recognizable theme.

I guess that’s why my ears naturally perk up to Ominous Voice’s Orchestra remix of the classic Transformers theme.

Yes, you’ll likely hum “Robots In Disguise” when that familiar hook appears, but Voice’s attempt and bridging the cartoon theme and Jablonsky’s score work is remarkable as the remix comes off as majestic as Optimus Prime rallying the troops with a battle speech.

Weekend Remix: Indoctrinated Sounds

Song: Saren’s Prayer
By: Mazerdude
Based On: Saren From Mass Effect
Original Composers: David Kates, Jack Wall, Richard Jacques and Sam Hulick

It’s time to jump through a Mass Relay for this week’s Weekend Remix. Maybe it’s the effects from last week’s remix, but I’m rummaging through some villain vibes. So OC Remix’s BaddAss: Boss Themes has been playing in my MP3 player for the past couple of weeks, with of course a few tracks getting the repeat treatment.

Among those is Mazerdude’s amazing Saren’s Prayer. Based off the character theme from Mass Effect, this remix manages to stick to the Turian’s awesome air, while also keeping things fresh.

Saren’s Prayer plays like a galactic death march, as the tribal percussion drums in a militant rhythm. And with the synths sounding downright sinister, you’d think that Reapers were just around the corner.
