Andy Serkis Returning For “RotPotA” Sequel

Good new for fans of Rise of the Planet of the Apes: Andy Serkis has signed up to return for the sequel to the rebooted franchise.

The summer block buster—which has thus far grossed $453 million worldwide—now has the motion capture genius back into its fold. But whether the sequel will feature the return of James Franco or Frieda Pinto is unknown at the moment.

Film Review: Rise of the Planet of the Apes

Director: Rupert Wyatt
Writer: Pierre Bouelle (Suggested by novel “La Planete  des Singes”), Rick Jaffa, Amanda Silver
Cast: James Franco, Frieda Pinto, John Lithgow, Tom Felton, Andy Serkis, Brian Cox, David Oyelowo, David Hewlett, Tyler Labine

Plot Summary: An origin story set in present day San Francisco, where man’s own experiments with genetic engineering lead to the development of intelligence in apes and the onset of a war for supremacy. [IMDB]

When Rise of the Planet of the Apes was first announced I was a bit skeptical, as it is part of this trend in Hollywood going on right now where they are literally going back to almost every old sci-fi property and rebooting them. Not only that, but the last Apes film by Tim Burton still left me with some pretty bad and disappointed memories. Then there was the fact that this latest installment into the franchise would be a prequel and, as most people know, there isn’t such thing as a good prequel film out there.

However, after seeing the first trailer a few months back, I did grow a bit more hopeful, and during the weeks leading up to its release I built up enough interest to see it. Did the film pay off all that growing interest and excitement? Read on to find out.

20th Century Fox Releases First International Poster For “Rise of the Planets of the Apes”

20th Century Fox has just released their first international poster for their upcoming prequel to the Planet of the Apes franchise, Rise of the Planet of the Apes.

Starring James Franco, Frieda Pinto and John Lithgow, the film centers around Franco playing a scientist who develops a cure for Alzheimer’s disease and sets out to test it on a chimpanzee named Caesar. The cure instead accelerates the development of Caesar’s brain to the point where the company feels they must terminate him and other infected apes with the cure. In turn, Caesar begins his  revolution against the humans.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011) Trailer #2

Director: Rupert Wyatt
Writer: Pierre Buelle (suggested by novel “La planete des singes”), Rick Jaffa, Amanda Silver
Cast: James Franco, Frieda Pinto, John Lithgow, Andy Serkis, Tom Felton, Brian Cox, David Hewlett

Plot Summary: An origin story set in present day San Francisco, where man’s own experiments with genetic engineering lead to the development of intelligence in apes and the onset of a war for supremacy. [IMDB]

So here we have the second trailer released for the upcoming prequel film of the Planet of the Apes franchise. This trailer shows more footage and pretty much focuses on the future leader of the ape revolution, Caesar. This also serves the dual purpose of being a showcase for more of Weta Digital’s work on the film and I must say the apes look gorgeous. Whether this will remain as a prequel, or lead to a new franchise of films, is anybody’s guess. So is the possibility of this being a hit or even a good prequel film (because we all know there isn’t such thing as a good prequel film).

Until then, be on the lookout for this film when it hits theatres August 5th, 2011.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes Trailer #1

Director: Rupert Wyatt
Writer:
Pierre Bouelle, Rick Jaffa, Amanda Silver
Cast:
James Franco, Frieda Pinto, Tom Felton, Brian Cox, Andy Serkis, John Lithgow, David Hewlett

Plot Summary: An origin story set in present day San Francisco, where man’s own experiments with genetic engineering lead to the development of intelligence in apes and the onset of a war for supremacy.

Here we have the origin story of the whole Planet of the Apes series of films. Many sites have described what they see in this film as a cautionary tale of what happens when humans mess around with things beyond their understanding. To me, this feels a lot like the Terminator films in that instead of a super intelligent network (Skynet) taking over the world with machines, it is a super intelligent ape (Caesar), who along with his fellow apes, takes over the world.

With a cast headlined by James Franco and a strong supporting group, this should be on the radar of all you sci-fi nuts as well as fans of the Apes films.
