Film Review: The Dictator

“Tell me, are you having a boy or are you having an abortion?”

Sacha Baron Cohen has carved out a niche for himself in his marriage of social taboos with uncomfortable comedy. It worked like gangbusters on his brilliant television show Da Ali G Show, and has worked to varying degrees in his four feature films, Ali G Indahouse, Borat, Bruno and now, The Dictator. Where his first feature failed by taking one of the characters from his show and putting him in a fictional narrative, he stuck to what he does best with his next two features, putting real people in uncomfortable situations, having to talk to someone they normally wouldn’t associate with.

When it was first announced, The Dictator was said to be an adaptation of Saddam Hussein’s novel Zabibah and the King, but Baron Cohen and frequent collaborator/director Larry Charles have jettisoned most of that material and gone for something a little more comfortable.

DJ Flula Interviews Cast Of “The Dictator”

Screen Junkies posted this video of someone named DJ Flula interviewing the cast of The Dictator, so to get you primed for the film (or my review of it) this weekend, watch this hapless young man get decimated by the cast of the film.

Movie Forecast: May 2012

It’s the month of May and all I can say is… May the 4th be with you! Because that is the sole date most of you all care about. The Avengers will cast some dark shadows over Dark Shadows, sink battleships, give you exactly what you expect when you’re not expecting, dictate what you will see this month and will probably leave you feeling like men in black as your life will feel complete as you write in your diaries about the kingdom of heaven you will see after watching the penultimate super hero movie as you say, God bless America.

New Poster For “The Dictator”
Paramount has released this latest poster in anticipation for their comedy which is set to be released May 16th. The poster features a portrait of the Admiral General Aladeen—Sacha Baron Cohen’s latest over exaggerated character—stretched across all of Manhattan’s Central Park.
The film is essentially a fish out of water story which comes as change of pace from the mockumentary style of films that Borat and Bruno were.

“The Dictator” (2012) Trailer #2

Alright, I have to admit that this movie does have a bit more going for it than Sacha Baron Cohen as a ridiculous character playing on a stereotype. Seeing as this isn’t a mockumentary, there does have to be a legitimate story behind the film.

This trailer reveals that this is yet another fish out of water story. Basic story, yes, but hey, this is a comedy. What will really make or break this movie are the gags and jokes it has in it, and I have to say I laughed my ass off with the final gag in this trailer.

The Dictator lands in America on May 11th.

“The Dictator” (2012) Trailer #1

Never one to shy away from controversial to offensive subject matter, Sacha Baron Cohen (Borat, Bruno) returns to the big screen with yet another over-the-top caricature. This time around, his film centers around a “heroic” dictator and his tale of triumph of keeping the evil democracies from invading his oppressive dictatorship.

Although the project is more of a fictional film than a mockumentary, the change up in formula works and the various gags shown thus far in this trailer are hilarious.

Also cast in this film are John C. Reilly, Sir Ben Kingsley, Megan Fox and Anna Faris.

The film hits theatres May 11th, 2012.

Megan Fox and John C. Reilly to Cameo in “The Dictator”

[THR]

Megan Fox and John C. Reilly are making cameos in Paramount’s The Dictator, the latest Sacha Baron Cohen comedy currently in production in New York with Borat director Larry Charles at the helm.

The movie has been described as “the heroic story of a dictator who risked his life to ensure that democracy would never come to the country he so lovingly oppressed.” Cohen is said to play dual roles of a goat herder and a deposed foreign ruler who gets lost in the U.S.”

Looks like Megan Fox is starting to build up some momentum for her film career after a series of unfortunate films and incidents the past couple of years. After being booted out of the Transformers series and having two flops in Jonah Hex and Jennifer’s Body, she’s starting to come around with a couple of projects in the works, including her now reported cameo in the upcoming Sacha Baron Cohen film. I can’t say much about her as I’ve never found her that terrible. Then again, I skipped over Jonah Hex and Jennifer’s Body. For her fans, let’s hope this cameo helps her career.

Either way, I’m more interested in the film as I’m a big fan of Sacha Baron Cohen. All I’m hoping for with this film is that it doesn’t have that mockumentary feel to it like his last two films, Borat & Bruno. (Yes, I know he’s worked on other films, but those were his starring role.)
