Game Review: Tomb Raider

Lara Croft hit hard times as Eidos slowly fell over the past several years. While the series continued to produce modest hits, Lara’s name became barely relevant and she was demoted to the B-list of gaming. But Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics had a plan to reboot the franchise and find ourselves a new hero built on the foundations of the old pin-up action star.

Tomb Raider is a monumental step forward for action gaming. With a well-polished adventure that refreshingly stars an empowered woman who kicks ass, Lara is back and is better than ever before.

After a stuffed holiday season, gamers usually anticipate a bit of time off to catch up on last year’s favorites that they might’ve missed or glossed over.

But 2013 is not one of those years.

Looking at the first six months of this year, publishers are pulling out all the stops, delivering games such as Ni No Kuni, DmC, Rayman Legends, Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon, Gears of War: Judgement, and God of War: Ascension. As good as all these games will be, they didn’t even crack the list of Top 5 Most Anticipated Games Of Early 2013.

“Tomb Raider” Box Art Has Lara Looking Vulnerable

Revealed earlier today on their Facebook page, Crystal Dynamics’ new reboot of the Tomb Raider franchise is banking heavy on the more vulnerable side of the young Lara on the final box art for next year’s release.

I was able to demo the game at PAX Prime this year and, let me say, fans of third-person action games, like Uncharted, should keep a very close on the new Lara.

Tomb Raider is slated for release March 5, 2013, on PS3, 360, and PC.

Top 5: Most Anticipated Games of E3 2012

Most people say Christmas is their favorite time of year. I laugh at the thought.

There’s a reason why gamers around the world get uncontrollably excited this time every year. That’s because it’s coming. Like the inevitability of the sun rising and a new Call of Duty every year, there’s one gaming event that stands above the rest. It makes headlines, has us glued to our computers, and sets out the next year of a gamer’s life.

It’s time for the Most Anticipated Games of E3 2012.

Geek Spotlight: E3 2012 Predictions

Every year gamers wait anxiously for E3. We anxiously watch as top executives stroll onstage and drop announcements the size of atom bombs. But there’s always the inevitable disappointments that arise. Predictions that never come to fruition.

We all make them in hopeful anticipation of a dream game. And, like the overly excited gamer that I am, have a handful of predictions to share. I can’t guarantee that I’ll be right about anything but this list is everything I think will happen next week at E3 2012.

Lara Croft Takes A Beating In The First Gameplay Trailer of “Tomb Raider”

If you aren’t excited about the reboot of the Tomb Raider franchise, here’s your new reason to throw down a pre-order.

In the first gameplay trailer, Lara is looking more vulnerable than ever and is fending off death by any means necessary. The new game appears to take cues from the Uncharted series and looks to add a survival element mixed into the action.

Tomb Raider will be released March 5th, 2013, on PS3, 360 and PC.

Tomb Raider E3 Trailer

Crystal Dynamics and Square Enix decided to kick off E3 a bit early with their trailer for the new Tomb Raider game.

Set to come out for PS3 and Xbox 360 in Fall 2012, the reboot has Lara, fresh from the Academy, shipwrecked on an island and forced to survive. Gamers will have to level up certain skills to advance, craft helpful tools from scavenged items, and of course, solve puzzles, which Crystal Dynamics is promising will be tougher. Combat will also be bloodier and perhaps much more manual than in previous games thanks to the removal of auto-aim.

The trailer looks beautiful, but it’s footage of the gameplay that’s going to fully convince me of its potential.

“Iron Man” Writers Recruited To Reboot “Tomb Raider” Franchise

Iron Man screenwriters Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby have been hired to pen a new Tomb Raider movie that will reboot the blockbuster action-adventure franchise.

According to Heat Vision, the writers say they hope to create an “origin story for Lara Croft that solidifies her place alongside Ellen Ripley and Sarah Connor in the pantheon of great female action heroes.”

The film rights to the classic video-game property were acquired in March by producer Graham King’s GK Films, which is shooting for a 2013 release. King will produce with Tim Headington.

The archaeologist-adventurer was famously portrayed by Angelina Jolie in two Paramount Pictures adaptations, 2001′s Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and 2003′s Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life, which grossed a combined $432 million worldwide.

Fergus and Otsby earned an Academy Award nomination for best adapted screenplay for 2006′s Children of Men, and are among several writers on this summer’s Cowboys & Aliens. They also worked on upcoming adaptations of Maximum Ride and Akira.”

I had no idea the rights had been acquired by someone else. Makes sense though. I was surprised that Paramount actually made a sequel at all really. After the first film, I certainly had no interest.
