Weekend Remix: Go Go Gadget Thunder!

Song: Gadget/Thundercats
By: CAI
Based On: Themes and Sounds from Inspector Gadget And Thundercats (80s)
Original Composers: Haim Saban, Shuki Levy and James Lipton

We’re taking an ride through the 80s, trance style, for this week’s Weekend Remix.

It’s probably safe to say that any self-proclaimed child of the 80s or early 90s can hum the theme songs to the original Thundercats and Inspector Gadget cartoons.

The two stand out more than Cloud Strife at a Happy Heroes’ Convention. With that being said, to somehow incorporate either song into a techno audio arena is a cool idea. To combine both into a single song is mad.

But in the skillful hands of the London based CAI, the idea just sounds cool when you actually hear it. Listening to his classic Gadget/Thundercats mix is like speeding towards the 80s in a DeLorean, while bumping hard trance records through the speakers. Past and future collide at break neck electronica speeds.

And the song is just as fun and attention grabbing as the toons themselves.

Until next weekend… GO GO Gadget Party!

Dr. Wily Stage 1

Weekend Remix: A Mega Sleep

Song: Dr. Wily Stage 1 (Lullaby)
By: Mark Polydoris
Based On: Dr. Wily Stage 1 from Mega Man 2
Original Composer: Takashi Tateishi

Time to call upon Rush, charge up that buster and…sleep? Yep, fall into a peaceful slumber for this week’s Weekend Remix.

Normally, thoughts of Mega Man 2 usually include remembering countless stage obstacles and enemy patterns set to an intense, yet fun, 8-bit soundtrack. Talk about pushing the limit. I’m sure the Mega Man 2 soundtrack did all that it could take full advantage of the NES sound system.

Sleeping is not something one usually equates with Mega Man 2, but that might change thanks to Mark Polydoris’ album Mega Man 2 Lullaby. The album pretty much takes the soundtrack and rearranges them for calming piano renditions.

The dreamy covers however are simply beautiful takes on one of the most popular Mega Man soundtracks and places songs in new lights. For example through Mark’s hands, Dr. Wily Stage 1 sounds more like the somber end result of battle instead of the beginning of a one (Mega) man war.

You can find the album here.

Until next weekend, sleep tight, and…GO Party!

album Phili D & Bmkikibeats Present:The Animated Mixtape

Weekend Remix: Friends From Out Of Town

Song: Peeps (Dinosaucers Remix)
By: Phili D & Bmkikibeats
Based On: Theme from Dinosaucers
Original Composers: Shuki Levy And Haim Saban

Despite what Dinosaucers might have you believe, going out in the woods will not result in meeting Dinosaur Aliens. In my experience, I’ve only met with tree limbs, (in my hair) owls (also in my hair), and mud (I think you can guess where).

But that’s okay because thanks to the short-lived series, we wound up with one of the catchiest 80s cartoon themes, chock full of light-show lasers and a one word-chorus sung as if it were trying to fill an arena.

Phili D & Bmkikibeats already win points for even attempting to craft a song with this theme. Luckily, it’s a pretty catchy mix, transporting the original into a hip-hop shell.

While Phili D manages to cleverly take the concept of “friends” from the show and make it his own for Peeps, it’s Bmkikibeats that really shines as he manages to sample the theme, transforming this song into a hip-hop anthem about your buddies’ misadventures.

It’s the perfect soundtrack to Phili D’s lyrics.

Karate Kid Vs Mortal Kombat !

Weekend Remix: Finish Him Daniel-san!

Song: Karate Kid Vs. Mortal Kombat
By: DJ Fade
Based On: Techno Syndrome from Mortal Kombat and sound clips from The Karate Kid
Original Composers: The Immortals

So what if Johnny had literally tried to put Daniel in a body bag? It’s what I’ve been wondering while listening to this week’s remix.

The Karate Kid and Mortal Kombat are two completely different properties, where the only loose link is martial arts. However, thanks to DJ Fade, the two synch up for quite an interesting mash-up.

Fade plays around with The Immortals’ techno classic, manipulating the beat like a DJ whose trying to push the crowd beyond party mode. Sprinkle in some familiar sound bytes and it’s almost as if The Karate Kid actually took place in Outworld.

Although to be a fair, I doubt a swan kick is going to do much against a ninja that freezes everything.

Weekend Remix: Stark Records

Song: The Iron Man Trilogy Remix
By: Mike Relm
Based On: Iron Man from Black Sabbath and sounds and clips from Iron Man (film)
Original Composers: Ozzy Osbourne, Geezer Butler,Bill Ward, and Tony Iommi

It’s no secret that most fans were left impressed with the latest Iron Man film. The movie not only managed to smash box office records, but it also garnered some praise on the level of Marvel’s The Avengers.

It served as a perfect film to properly open the summer movie season. With Stark’s solo film adventures now a trilogy, it would make sense for Mike Relm’s remix to document that fact.

Relm’s mix takes the Sabbath classic into a techno realm, sprinkling in chopped soundbites and scenes as if a DJ is playing doctor on the trilogy.

It’s a fun addition to the films.

Weekend Remix: Rapper’s Bluff

Song: Lupe Fiasco/Trigun Mashup
By: redmtal
Based On: Big Bluff from Trigun and I’m Beamin’ from Lupe Fiasco
Original Composer: Tsuneo Imahori

This edition of The Weekend Remix is worth at least 60,000,000,000$$, but I swear it didn’t level a city.

Maybe it doesn’t make much sense to do a mashup between one of the world’s lyrically strong rappers in the game and the soundtrack to a Mr. Vash The Stampede. Or maybe it does. One could argue that Fiasco’s deep bars are a perfect compliment to the layered story and characters of Trigun.

But however you wanna slice it, you’ve got to admit that this mashup between Lupe’s I’m Beamin’ and Trigun’s Big Bluff seems tailor made for each other. Interstellar cool crashes onto a dust ball planet of gun battles and sandstorms in redmtal’s mashup, making this sound like something between Danger Mouse, Imahori, and gunfight Westerns.

S3RL - 'Neon Genesis' - Pulse Remix [Relentless Digital] Out Now!!! @ Hardcore Addiction 6

Weekend Remix: Cruel Dance Thesis

Song: ‘Neon Genesis’ Pulse Remix
By: Pulse and DJ S3RL
Based On: ”Cruel Angel’s Thesis” from Neon Genesis Evangelion and Neon Genesis from S3RL
Original Composers:  Yoko Takahashi, Neko Oikawa, Hidetoshi Satō Toshiyuki Ōmori

Prep your Eva-Unit for this edition of the Weekend Remix, as we’re diving into the music of Neon Genesis Evangelion.

“Cruel Angel Thesis” is quite a unique opening for Neon Genesis Evangelion if you think about it. A show whose theme, character, and story-wise is about as heavy as a city-destroying mech would usually warrant a somber or serious sounding opening, at least musically speaking. The lyrics are another story.

Instead, thanks to the insistence of television execs, the show got a hard driving but catchy J-pop shell.

DJ S3RL’s initial remix placed the song on a hardcore techno bent. And thanks to Pulse’ remix of that remix (more layers than Inception at this point folks), the song manages to go further down the techno rabbit hole, speeding up the pitch of the sampled original and layering it against the backdrop setting of some fun acid warehouse rave.

Whether it serves as the soundtrack to an ambitious AMV or a track to get the cosplaying crowd going, Pulse’s remix of this tune is a definite must hear.

Weekend Remix: A Capella 64

Song: Dire Dire Docks A Capella
By:Smooth McGroove
Based On: Dire Dire Docks from Super Mario 64
Original Composer: Koji Kondo

This edition of The Weekend Remix is dedicated to everyone’s favorite red-wearing plumber. Normally, the Weekend Remix has stuck strictly to audio, but like the rearranger we’re focusing on this time, I figured it was okay if we broke tradition and did some video. Besides, actually witnessing how Smooth McGroove breaks down the parts of famous GO-related song is just as fun as hearing them.

If you’ve had the chance to peruse YouTube, then you may already be familiar with this artist, who manages to do some of the most detailed a capella renditions of gaming’s favorite tunes.

Dire Dire Docks, with it’s peaceful notes, would probably be easier to tackle on piano rather than voice. Heck, even a team of singers would seem more likely to handle this song instead of one voice.

Instead, what we get is a team of Mr. McGrooves that manage to cover the song probably note for note, while showcasing an impressive range that reminds us that the voice isn’t just something to be supported by instruments — it’s also an instrument as well.

album Time and Space, Deluxe Edition

Weekend Remix: Final Rhyme Tactics

Song: Tactics
By: Random Aka Mega Ran
Based On: Decisive Battle from Final Fantasy Tactics
Original Composers: Masaharu Iwata and Hitoshi Sakimoto

Life is often like a tactical role playing game. Instead of rushing in head first to take it on, sometimes one must strategize and plan their moves, while also adapting to any new challenges that come your way. That’s why this week we’re taking a trip to the kingdom of Ivalice for this edition of the Weekend Remix.

Final Fantasy Tactics may have taken the Final Fantasy franchise into a different gameplay style, but the game still had many of the same thematic and production factors found in any of Square hallmark series, including the music.

Decisive Battle lives up to its name as it’s a dramatic symphony that has just the right amount of punch — especially in the percussion department — to make whatever fight it soundtracks seem as if any move you make has to count.

Through the talented words and production hands of Random, none of  Decisive Battle’s life or death flair is lost. In fact, Random manages to make it seem like a perfect fit, serving as the perfect hard sounding backdrop to his impeccable lyrics. As you’ll hear, the rapper has no problem switching up his flow while making it seem so effortless.

With Ran’s class abilities as a rapper and producer at the top, consider this remix mastered.

If you’d like to hear more Mega Ran, check out Time and Space, his latest EP TRAP, or… really check out any of his many albums and Eps. You can’t go wrong. And for those in the UK, be sure to catch him on tour

Weekend Remix: A Song That Flaps In The Night

Song: Darkwing Duck Theme (CGT Remix)
By: CrazyGroupTrio
Based On: The theme from Darkwing Duck
Original Composers: Steve Nelson And Thom Sharp

With Disney theme songs on the brain, this edition of The Weekend Remix is taking place with everyone’s favorite caped crusader.

No.

Not that one.

Yeah, the one with the gas gun. Darkwing Duck has one of the most memorable theme songs crafted from the doors of the mouse. With it’s mingle between urban new jack swing and dance pop, it’s one of the coolest theme songs created. And while in most regards it’s pretty much untouchable, this week’s remix is still pretty fun.

CrazyGroupTrio put Darkwing’s theme through a speedier electronica filter. But instead of causing images of Darkwing and Launchpad Disco Ducking it in the clubs, this song feels more in synch in old school gaming.

CGT’s remix sounds as if they were hired by Capcom in 1994 to make a fun Darkwing Duck platformer.

Bottom line, somewhere in an alternate universe, a 16-bit Darkwing Duck game exists with CGT’s take on the theme song, completely pushing what the SNES and Genesis could do musically. We’d be stuck on the title screen quite some time before pushing start.

Weekend Remix: All About The Boats And Dragons

Song: Whur Muh Boats At? (Remix)
By: Adam WarRock & Applefrog
Based On: Whur Muh Boats At?
Original Composer: Applefrog

Are those dragons I see on the horizon? Then that could only mean that HBO’s Game Of Thrones has returned. The show kicked off its third season last Sunday, earning millions of views.

And to celebrate its return, artist Adam WarRock decided to jump on board Applefrog’s hilarious yet catchy Whur Muh Boats At? Released last year, Applefrog pointed out the song was his “thoughts on season two” of the show.

While the beat and the video are wonderful enough alone to get stuck in your head, the addition of WarRock takes this song to another level. Rappers often jump on original songs. That’s nothing new. But it takes true talent to make such a seamless fit, which WarRock has absolutely no problem doing. Lyrically, it’s almost as if WarRock was made for this song.

Be sure to bump this one loud in the stereo right before the next episode.

Dirt In The Palace (Jay-Z vs. Chrono Trigger Mashup)

by 2 Mello
album Chrono Jigga

Weekend Remix: I’m A Time Hussla Homie

Song: Dirt In the Palace
By: 2 Mello
Based On: Zeal Palace in Chrono Trigger and Dirt Off Your Shoulders in The Black Album
Original Composers: Yasunori Mitsuda, Nobuo Uematsu, Timbaland and Jay-Z

Just when you think it’s over, the Weekend Remix seems to always find itself going back to the music of Chrono Trigger like a time portal that vacuums you. But Chrono Trigger contains arguably one of the greatest gaming soundtracks, meaning it’s just perfect for remixers and artists to experiment with.

The same could be said for Jay-Z, whose music has resulted in some interesting mash-ups like the classic Danger Mouse produced Grey Album, which took Hov’s Black Album and mashed it up with the Beatle’s White Album.

2 Mello decided to follow the mash-up route, taking some of Jay-Z’s best and mixing it with Chrono Trigger’s OST. What results, is one of the electrifying and liveliest mash-up projects in quite sometime. Dirt In The  Palace is a prime example as to why Chrono Jigga is worth a listen.

Dirt Off Your Shoulder and Zeal Palace are two very different songs put through a blender to present  both songs’ best qualities. While Jay’s charismatic rap bravado pushes the song onward, it’s Zeal’s dramatic vibe that just makes this song feel grand.  It’s the soundtrack to a time-traveling adventurer based out of Marcy Projects.

Weekend Remix: Super Star Sounds Part 2

Song: Ska Buffet (All You Can Eat Dirty Version)
By: The OverClocked Plaid Muffins
Based On: Clash! Gourmet Race from Kirby Super Star
Original Composer: Jun Ishikawa

Welcome back for another edition of the Weekend Remix. Last week we featured Milky Way Wishes: A Kirby Super Star Tribute, the latest arrangement album from OverClocked ReMix, starring everyone’s favorite enemy eater.

While last week’s remix focused on a spacey ride though electronica chiptune melodies, this week we’re going through some ska. The OverClocked Plaid Muffins are actually an all-star team of OC ReMix arrangers, remixers and musicians.

Included are: Level 99, PrototypeRaptor, LuIzA, Swann, Xenon Odyssey, Cyril the Wolf, AMT and Avaris.

Taking the super catchy Clash! Gourmet Race, this cover still infects the ears like a pop gem, but has enough energetic force to get you jumping around the room like it’s late 90’s Warped Tour.

Be sure to download Milky Way here.

Weekend Remix: Super Star Sounds Part 1

Song: Spelunking In Space
By: Hylian Lemon
Based On: Cocoa Cave From Kirby Super Star
Original Composers: Jun Ishikawa, Dan Miyakawa

It looks like we’re visiting everyone’s favorite pink-puff superstar for this edition of the Weekend Remix.

The talented bunch at OC ReMix recently released a new album dedicated to Nintendo’s Kirby. Titled Milky Way Wishes: A Kirby Super Star Tribute, the album is a remix love letter to the classic Kirby Super Star for the Super Nintendo.

This marks the second OC ReMix album dedicated to Kirby as well as their 38th arrangement. It was also an album that’s taken eight years to become reality. But when you download the album — which you can do right now — you’ll quickly notice the amount of time only increased efforts to produce one of the best arrangements.

Not only are you getting an awesome mix of rock, electronica, hip-hop, and even ska remixes, you’re also getting a ton of artwork. Milky Way Wishes features some special storybook-style artwork also dedicated to the game. But for the sake of this article, we’re focusing on the music, specifically Hylian Lemon’s remix of Cocoa Cave.

Spelunking In Space still maintains the energetic drive of the original. But instead of being driven by jungle bass and drums like in the original Cocoa Cave, this remix is dominated by chiptune melodies that seem to rocket into space. That is, until the two minute mark, where the song seems to slow to a zero gravity float before crashing back down to earth.

This is simply a fun ride on a star.

Check back next week as we’ll take another look at tune from this stellar album.

Until next week…GO Party!

by KazuhirO

Weekend Remix: Smooth Ride Through Space

Song: Winds Of Space
By: KazuhirO (Kazuhiro Hayate)
Based On: Hiru no Tsuki from Outlaw Star
Original Composers: Akino Arai and Kow Otani

Get your Grappler Ship ready as we’re taking a nice ride through space for this edition of the Weekend Remix.

Outlaw Star. It’s an anime that pulls at the memories of many who practically grew up on Toonami. A space-western wrapped in a science-fantasy shell, from the characters to the weaponry, this show simply could not fail.

And it’s why when one of the ending themes, Hiru no Tsuki, plays that fans hearts swell with teary nostalgia.Okay, that’s part of the reason. The other is that Hiru is simply an amazingly somber and beautiful song.

The true beauty is rooted in its simplicity. KazuhirO decided to change things up with this remix, speeding up the famous vocals and setting them up for a trip through a smooth RnB sound.

Nothing could ever be better than the original tune, but even with that in mind, KazuhirO’s  intergalactic RnB remix is a pretty cool take.
