Royalcore in 2021: How to Dress the Part

Taylor Swift’s album, “Folklore”, opened the minds of many to the now-popular style aesthetic known as cottagecore. Though it’s a cozy style that favors comfort and simple living, this is not what everyone gravitates to. Royalcore is one aesthetic that you might relate to if you’re a city-loving, challenge-driven power woman. More specifically, you might be drawn to queencore.

Here’s how to dress according to this aesthetic in 2021:

Fit is everything

While cottagecore is all about loose silhouettes and flowy material, in royalcore, regal is the main element of your style. And nothing says regal more than outfits that look like they were tailor-made for you. Make no mistake, regal doesn’t necessarily mean expensive. It just means having your clothes altered to your body shape, to get the most of each piece. But of course, investing in high-quality pieces is one advice most fashion icons will give you, royalcore or not.

Be bold

Royalcore is all about confidence and upholding your regal self. Red is the perfect color to show your confidence, as it is a commanding color that draws attention and signifies passion. Of course, you don’t always have to go with bright reds–muted red or darker maroons are perfectly acceptable, especially if you are choosing the shade based on your skin type. You don’t have to wear red from head to toe as well. The easiest way to add red to your outfit is through a red lipstick or a pair of red heels. Red accessories may also be perfect, especially when paired with an all-black attire. Aside from red, you can also go for the regal colors purple and gold.

Self-care is a must

In cottagecore, the concept of slow and nature-inspired living in itself may already be considered self-care, but in royalcore, self-care is not just a byproduct. It’s a code you live by as one who knows what she deserves. A face mask for women is your best friend. Pencil in those long baths and light those soothing candles–and if you have to binge-watch The Crown to remind yourself that you are held to a higher standard, go for it. A pint of ice cream is still perfectly acceptable as comfort food, but don’t forget the golden spoon to eat it with.

Care for your crowning glory

Contrasting again with cottagecore, where you let your hair down and live carefree, royalcore is all about control and restraint. You know your priorities and you dress in a way that tells everyone you will reach your goals. A simple, low bun, or a bob with every strand of hair in place is what you go for. You never miss your salon trips, and you will not be seen with uncombed hair even if your life depended on it. Think Queen Regina from Once Upon a Time.
